Creating More Inclusive Play in Rocky Face, Georgia
Westside Park Adaptive Playground - Rocky Face, Ga.
When children of all abilities can play together, entire communities benefit.
That's exactly what happened at Westside Park Playground in Rocky Face, Georgia, where an adaptive playground adjacent to Miracle Field is helping create a more welcoming and accessible environment for local families. Shawgrass visited the playground on Opening Day of the Miracle League of Whitfield County's fall baseball season to hear directly from Miracle League families about how the playground is making a difference in their daily lives.
Completed in March 2026, the playground was made possible through a collaborative effort between Whitfield County Parks & Recreation and Safe Play Solutions. Their goal was clear: create an inclusive play space that could accommodate children of all abilities while providing a safe, durable, and accessible surface throughout the playground.
To help achieve that vision, the project features Shawgrass' Accelerate 62 product installed over a 2-inch Brock shock pad system, creating a short-pile synthetic turf surface designed to support wheelchair accessibility and impact attenuation requirements as part of the complete installed system.
But the real story is what happens on the playground every day.
The adaptive playground was thoughtfully designed to remove barriers to play. Features include a wheelchair-accessible swing, a sign language and communication board, and a ramp that allows wheelchair access to all aspects of the playground. The synthetic turf surface ties the entire space together, providing a consistent, accessible pathway that allows children and caregivers to navigate the playground with greater ease.
For local families, the difference is easy to see.
Community response to the project has been overwhelmingly positive. Parents and children have embraced the new playground, which represents a significant upgrade from the previous play area. The enhanced accessibility allows more children to participate, interact, and experience the joy of play together.
